Hexlox anti-theft set
About Hexlox
Section titled “About Hexlox”Hexlox is a minimalist anti-theft system that protects individual bike components. It is a small magnetic steel insert that fits into the Allen (hex) bolts already on your bike.
What it protects
Section titled “What it protects”Hexlox stops thieves from removing specific parts of your bike, including:
- wheels (front and rear)
- saddle and seatpost
- stem and handlebar
Once inserted, the Hexlox blocks the bolt head, so the bolt cannot be undone with a standard Allen key. It can only be removed with your own coded Hexlox key.
How secure is it?
Section titled “How secure is it?”- High resistance: it cannot be removed with standard tools such as screwdrivers, tweezers, pliers or Allen keys.
- Magnet-proof: although the insert holds in the steel bolt magnetically, the mechanism itself is mechanically locked and shielded. Strong external magnets cannot pull it out.
- Strong deterrent: no lock is indestructible, but Hexlox gives very good real-world protection against opportunistic thieves looking for a quick grab.
Choosing your Hexlox set
Section titled “Choosing your Hexlox set”The essentials
Section titled “The essentials”- Hexlox key: you need at least one coded Hexlox key with your set; you can order more. This magnetic key is the only tool that inserts and removes the pins.
- Which components: first decide which bolts you want to protect. For comprehensive security we recommend securing both wheels and the seatpost.
Pin sizes by component
Section titled “Pin sizes by component”- Rear axle:
- Rohloff with A12 thru-axle: 2 × 5 mm pins
- Rohloff with quick release (QR): 1 × Hexlox QR skewer and 1 × 5 mm pin
- Shimano Alfine (axle nuts): 1 × Hexlox HEXNUT with a 6 mm insert (see below)
- Seatpost:
- Booda Bike seat clamp: 1 × 4 mm pin
- Front axle (thru-axle):
- 1 × 6 mm pin
- Note: you need a Hexlox-compatible front thru-axle, which has the small magnetic steel insert. A standard thru-axle only accepts the pin after it has been fitted with a magnetic insert.
- Handlebar and stem:
- Stem steerer clamp (side bolts): 5 mm pin
- Stem faceplate (front bolts that hold the handlebar): 4 mm pin
Fitting the Hexlox HEXNUT on a Shimano Alfine hub
Section titled “Fitting the Hexlox HEXNUT on a Shimano Alfine hub”Hexlox also has a video guide: Hexlox HEXNUT installation video.
-
Remove the existing nut
- Remove the stock axle nut from the non-drive side with a socket or combination wrench.
- Washers: make sure there is a proper washer under the nut. If the stock nut had an anti-rotation washer, keep it. If it was a serrated nut with an integrated washer, use the serrated washer supplied by Hexlox, with the serrations facing the frame.
-
Check the axle length
- Before tightening, hold the HEXNUT against the axle to check how far the axle protrudes.
- Look at the crease line just below the Hexlox logo on the outer body:
- If the axle is shorter than this line, continue.
- If the axle extends beyond this line, add the supplied spacer washer so the nut does not bottom out on the axle tip. (If in doubt, use the spacer washer.)
-
Fit and check the clamping
- Place the paper installation checker strip supplied with the HEXNUT between the washer and the base of the HEXNUT.
- Tighten the HEXNUT with a 6 mm Allen key to the axle-nut torque of your hub. If you do not know this value, contact us before tightening.
- Pull out the paper strip:
- Paper torn: the nut clamps correctly against the frame and washer.
- Paper intact: the axle is too long and is pressing against the inside of the nut. Remove the nut and add the spacer washer.
-
Lock it
- Insert the 6 mm Hexlox insert (sold separately) into the HEXNUT with your Hexlox key.
- Press on the protective cap.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- Free-spinning outer ring: the black outer ring of the HEXNUT spins freely even when fully tightened. This is deliberate: pliers or locking tools cannot grip the nut.
- Tools: a standard 6 mm Allen key, and a 6 mm Hexlox insert with key to lock it.
- Final check: before riding, make sure the wheel spins freely and the hub is firmly clamped in the dropouts.
Not sure which pins fit?
Section titled “Not sure which pins fit?”Contact us and tell us which parts you want to protect. We will confirm the right Hexlox set for your bike.
Which Hexlox pins do I need for my Booda Bike?
You need at least one coded Hexlox key, plus one pin for each bolt you want to protect. We recommend securing both wheels and the seatpost. The pin sizes depend on the component, for example two 5 mm pins for a Rohloff A12 rear axle and one 4 mm pin for the Booda seat clamp. If you are unsure, contact us and we will confirm the set.
