Hexlox anti theft set

Hexlox is a minimalist anti-theft system designed to protect individual bicycle components. It consists of a tiny, magnetic steel insert that plugs directly into the existing Allen (hex) bolts already on your bike.

It stops thieves from stealing specific parts of your bike, including:

  • Wheels (front and rear)
  • Saddles and seat posts
  • Stems and handlebars

Once inserted, the Hexlox blocks access to the bolt, preventing anyone from using a standard Allen key to unscrew it. It can only be removed using your unique, coded Hexlox Key.

  • High Resistance: It cannot be removed with standard tools like screwdrivers, tweezers, pliers, or Allen keys.
  • Magnet-Proof: Even though the insert connects magnetically to the steel bolt, the mechanism itself is mechanically locked and shielded. Powerful external magnets cannot pull it out.
  • Excellent Deterrent: While no lock is entirely indestructible, Hexlox offers outstanding real-world protection against opportunistic thieves looking for a quick grab.

  • The Hexlox Key: You must purchase at least 1 coded Hexlox Key with your set—though you can choose more if you prefer. This unique magnetic key is the only tool that allows you to insert and remove the pins from your bike.
  • Choosing Components: First, decide which component bolts you want to protect. For comprehensive security, we generally recommend securing both wheels (front and rear) and the seat post.

Size Selection Guide by Component

Please use the guide below to select the correct pin sizes for your setup:

  • Rear Axle:
    • For Rohloff A12: 2x 5mm pins
    • For Quick-Release (QR) Rohloff: 1x Hexlox QR Skewer and 1x 5mm pin
  • Seat Post:
    • For Booda Bike seat clamp: 1x 4mm pin
  • Front Axle (Thru-Axle):
    • 1x 6mm pin
    • Note: A Hexlox-compatible front thru-axle (which includes the small magnetic steel insert) is required. Standard factory thru-axles will only accept the Hexlox pin after being modified with a magnetic insert.
  • Handlebar & Stem:
    • Stem steerer clamp (side bolts): 5mm pin
    • Stem faceplate (front bolts holding the handlebar): 4mm pin

How to Install the Hexlox HEXNUT (Internal Gear Hubs / Shimano Alfine)

Section titled “How to Install the Hexlox HEXNUT (Internal Gear Hubs / Shimano Alfine)”

Installing the Hexlox HEXNUT on your internal gear hub is quick and straightforward. Follow these steps to secure your rear wheel.

  1. Remove Existing Nut
  • Use a socket or combination wrench to remove the stock axle nut from the non-drive side.
  • Note on Washers: Ensure a proper washer is present under the nut. If your stock nut had an integrated anti-rotation washer already in place, keep it. If it was an integrated serrated nut, use the serrated washer provided by Hexlox (place serrations facing towards the frame).
  1. Check Axle Length
  • Before tightening, place the HEXNUT against the axle to check protrusion length.
  • Look at the crease line just below the Hexlox logo on the outer body:
    • If the axle is shorter than this line, you can proceed directly.
    • If the axle extends beyond this line, add the included spacer washer to prevent bottoming out against the inner axle tip. (If in doubt, use the spacer washer).
  1. Install & Check Clearance
  • Insert the included paper Installation Checker paper strip between the washer and the HEXNUT base.
  • Tighten the HEXNUT using a 6mm Allen key to the torque setting specified by your hub manufacturer.
  • Pull the paper strip out:
    • Ripped paper: Indicates a correct installation where the nut clamps securely against the frame/washer.
    • Intact paper: Means the axle is too long and pressing against the inside of the nut. Remove the nut and add the spacer washer.
  1. Lock & Secure
  • Insert the 6mm Hexlox key insert (sold separately) into the HEXNUT socket using your Hexlox key.
  • Press on the protective rubber/color cap.
  • Free-Spinning Outer Ring: The outer black ring of the HEXNUT spins freely even when fully tightened. This is a deliberate security feature designed to prevent pliers or locking tools from gripping and removing the nut.
  • Tool Required: Installation requires a standard 6mm Allen key and a 6mm Hexlox insert with key to secure.
  • Final Check: Ensure the wheel spins smoothly and the hub is firmly clamped to the dropouts before riding.
